Holiday report #1

Ich hatte mir ja vorgenommen jetzt wo ich frei habe etwas häufiger hier was zu posten, klappt aber doch nicht so richtig. Meist warte ich dann doch wieder so lange, bis sich ein Haufen an Neuem gesammelt hat.

Fertig geworden ist….

Originally I had planned to post more regularly now that I don’t need to spend the day in the lab. Well, didn’t worked out. I still wait until things pile up…

First of all, the FO of this week:

Tapestry Cowl

Wollmeise Buxkranzl & Sonne, 50g of each

This was such a fun knit! To see the colors building up the design row by row was entertaining and I just kept knitting saying that “I will knit only one more row and then go on to do other things”. Suddenly the piece was finished

Das ist ein Teil, bei dem mir das Stricken wahnsinnig Spaß gemacht hat. Zu sehen wie das Muster langsam wächst was so spannend dass ich mir immer gesagt habe: “nur noch eine Reihe, dann hörst du auf für heute”. Tja, waren dann doch ein paar mehr.

Along the way I started knitting Wisteria. Great pattern but my idea to make a really dense fabric to keep the wind out hurts my hands when I’m knitting more than one or two rows.

Und nebenbei habe ich dann mit Wisteria angefangen. Leider mögen meine Hände es garnicht so ein windundurchlässiges Wollbrett zu stricken: nach ein paar Reihe tun mir meine Finger weh.

The collar is done and I’m in the middle of the yoke chart. I used the JMBC instead of a long-tail cast on so that I have live stitches on the top of the collar to use for the facing when the rest is done. My first steeking-project! Thanks to the quite fuzzy wool I think it will work well without unraveling any stitches.

Der Kragen ist fertig und ich bin gerade mitten in den Raglanzunahmen. Wie auf dem Photo vielleicht zu sehen habe ich oben die Maschen nicht mit einem Kreuzanschlag aufgenommen sondern mit einem JBMC/Figure 8 damit ich nachher noch eine Blende dranstricken kann. Mein erstes Steekingprojekt! Gut das die Wolle nicht so glatt ist

Another wip: the blanket. All the knitting is done! 80 squares out of a big heap of knitpicks palette and nearly half of them already blocked to unroll the edges a bit. Have I mentioned that I’m not so happy about all the sewing lying ahead? Here are the blocked squares:

Auch noch in Arbeit: die Decke. Es ist Fertiggestrickt! Alle 80 Quadrate liegen hier und mehr als die Hälfte ist schon gespannt damit sich die Ränder nicht mehr so arg rollen. Das wird beim Zusammennähen noch lustig. Hier der schon gespannte Haufen:

As with most of you the rate I use up wool is pretty much the same (or even smaller) than the rate of my wooly purchases. Being at a LYS in Aachen wasn’t of any help to reduce my stash.

Und wie das ja bei den meisten ist: wenn man Wolle verstrickt, kauft man auch welche. Dass ich letzte Woche im Wolltreffer in Aachen war, hat da natürlich auch zu beigetragen.

And this is pretty much all I purchased and knitted in the last days. No spinning since my last posting. As the testknitting on Yarnissimas zur Lederhosn restarted a few days ago this propably won’t change in the next week.

Und sonst? Nee, mehr gestrickt oder gekauft habe ich nicht. Und gesponnen habe ich seit dem letzten Posting auch nur ein paar Meter. Zudem hat das Lederhosn Teststricken für Yarnissima wieder angefangen und so wird sich das wohl auch in der nächsten Woche nicht ändern.

 

One of my new years resolutions…

… was aimed at learning new knitting techniques. This week (the first week of my 2-week holidays, woohooo!) I started my first doubleknitting project: the tapestry cowl. I wanted to start with a piece in a manageable size and in fingering weight because of all the Wollmeise yarn in my stash so it was exactly what I had searched for. I always thought that doubleknitting is complicated but is quite easy! What especially speaks to me is that there is no wrong side with floats (unlike stranded knitting). Maybe this could be perfect for a colorwork scarf? And what about doubleknitted mittens or gloves?

Einer meiner Neujahrsvorsätze zielte darauf ab, dass ich auch mal neue Stricktechniken ausprobiere. Und so habe ich meine 2-wöchigen Semesterferien mit einem Doubleknitting-Projekt eingeläutet: die Tapestry Cowl. Für den Anfang wollte ich etwas in einer bewältigbaren Größe, möglichst aus Sockenwolle um Wollmeisen dafür nutzen zu können und so kam mir das Muster gerade richtig. Ich dachte ja immer dass Doubleknitting kompliziert sei, aber es ist eigentlich ziemlich einfach! Für mich sogar einfacher als fair isle, weil man da keine Probleme mit der Fadenspannung hat. Und überhaupt sieht hier ja auch die Rückseite viel schöner aus. Und schon geistert mir ein Schal und Handschuhe mit dieser Technik im Kopf herum….

I’m planning to make a scarf out of this, maybe one more Just enough ruffles.

The striped blanket also grew a little: 33 of 100 squares done. Seems that I can reach my goal of finishing the knitting in the next two weeks….

.. und meine Streifendecke ist auch etwas gewachsen in den letzten Tagen: 33 von 100 Quadraten sind fertig. Es sieht also so aus, alsob ich alle 100 in den 2 Wochen fertig bekomme..

Excitement!!

Did sent off my submission for the Twist Collective fall issue a few minutes ago. As this is the first time for me trying to get published I’m soooo excited! Thinking of the time I have to wait until  knowing if they accept my design…..

Gerade habe ich meine Submission für die kommende Herbstausgabe des Twist Collectives abgeschickt. Es ist das erste Mal, dass ich versuche ein Design in eine Zeitschrift zu bekommen und ich bin ja sowas von aufgeregt. Wenn ich jetzt daran denke wie lange es noch dauert bis ich höre ob mein Design genommen wird… uff.

 

Big furry thing!

Before I go on explaining what the point is with the title of this post: spinning update!

All the yarn for wisteria is done!!

Bevor ich näher darauf eingehe wie der Titel dieses Posts zustande kommt, erstmal ein Update was meine Spinnerei angeht:

This was the first time for me to spin up such a huge amount of yarn. Most of my spinning projects get done in a weekend and so this was the first project going on about a few weeks. I’m impressed by the similar yardage of the yarns! Originally I was aiming for worsted but the wool turned out to be more aran/bulky. We’ll see how it’s knitting up.

Ich hätte garnicht gedacht, dass ich über Wochen hinweg eine so konsistente Lauflänge hinbekomme. Es ist definitiv eher aran /bulky, aber es wird schon irgendwie klappen.

Und gestrickt habe ich auch, wenn auch hauptsächlich mit der Maschine:

3 paar Socken, zwei davon gestrickt aus Wolle von Dibadu. Schaut mal vorbei, da finden sich seeehr schöne Farben!

And besides the spinning there was a bunch of machine knitting:

Und außerdem habe ich  nun mit meiner Decke aus KnitPicks Palette angefangen. Bis jetzt…

… and I started knitting the blanket out of KnitPicks Palette:

8 Quadrate, von geplanten 100.  Mit der Maschine geht das ja ganz fix.

Und wer hier schon länger liest wird sich jetzt wundern, denn ursprünglich wollte ich eigentlich solche “Ecken” in den Quadraten haben (Mitered Square Blanket-artig), doch es war mir einfach zu unruhig. Also habe ich mich für Streifen entschieden. Mal sehen wie lange ich für’s zusammennähen brauchen werde. Ich sehe es schon kommen: Strickzeit ca. 2 Wochen, Zeit fürs Zusammennähen ca. ein Jahr.

For all of you longtime readers: yes, my design for this blanket has changed. I started thinking that the Mitered Square Blanket in the Mason Dixon book would be great but after looking at my preview pic for a long time I decided that all the colors made me dizzy in that pattern. So I went with simple stripes. Might get the knitting finished in the next 2-3 weeks (thanks for the holidays), but sewing all the squares up will take… Long. Very Long. Even Longer.

Und nun zur Auflösung was ich mit dem Titel sagen will: (seid gewarnt, das ist ne längere Geschichte. Aber ihr seid ja zum lesen hier, hm?).

Ich bin nicht so der Hundemensch. Katzen sinds eher. So stehe ich den hechelnden Halbwölfen immer leicht kritisch gegenüber, vor allem wenn sie mir unangeleint gegenüber stehen. Kurz nachdem wir umgezogen waren wurde es mir schon klar: hier gibts Erziehungsprobleme. Morgens hörte man öfter “SPIIIIKKEEEE!!! KOMM SOFORT HIERHIN!! SPIKE! JETZT ABER WIRKLICH!”. Nach einigen Tagen dieses morgendlichen Kreischkonzerts war ich ja doch neugierig und linste aus dem Fenster:  Auf Krücken gehende Halterin mit großem unangeleintem Hund der tendenziell immer auf der Flucht vor seiner Halterin war (obwohl man das garnicht Halterin nennen kann, denn sie hat da nix gehalten, weder den Hund noch die Leine). Gut, einmal gegrinst und zu interessanteren Dingen gewechselt. Ein paar Tage später hatte es etwas gestürmt und als ich morgens zu meinem Auto ging lag ein recht dicker Ast halb drunter der nicht so aussah als “einfach drüberfahren” eine brilliante Idee wäre. Also bücke ich mich, nehme den Ast und was ist? Auf einmal rennt dieses Riesentier kläffend auf mich zu. Auch wenn Hunde nicht meine Seelenverwandten sind wars mir doch klar, dass Spike tatsächlich dachte, dass ich jetzt mit ihm spiele. TOLL. Riesenhund schnappt halb nach dem Ast, Julia bekommt Muffensausen und lässt den Ast erstmal fallen. Hund schnappt sich den Ast und haut ihn gegen mein Auto. Schramme im Lack (ist nicht die einzige, daher jetzt kein großes Drama an sich, aber trotzdem war es nicht stimmungssteigernd). Kein einziges Wort von der Halterin, die zu diesem Zeitpunkt immernoch zig Meter entfernt war. Auf mein schon leicht gereiztes Rufen, warum der Hund nicht an der Leine ist wenn er es nicht lassen kann hundophobische Passanten zu belästigen kam ein “der tut doch garnichts, der ist doch lieb!”. Das interessierte mich in diesem Moment eigentlich recht wenig, denn es ging mir eher darum, dass ich nicht von so einem Tier bedrängt werden will, und mein Auto wollte das auch nicht.

Und heute morgen passierte das schon wieder! Diesmal zwar ohne Ast + Schramme im Auto, aber dafür weiss ich jetzt, dass er prinzipiell auf mich zurennt, egal ob mit Spielzeug oder ohne. Klar, die Hundehalter unter euch werden jetzt sagen “na und?”, aber ich finde das grob unfreundlich. Ich will nicht von Hunden die bis zu meiner Hüfte reichen bedrängt werden. Und da ist es mir auch egal, ob der total lieb ist.

And now the explanation for the title: (be warned, that’s a rather long story)

I’m not a big dogperson. Cat’s are okay but dogs not that much. To be honest, the big ones running around unleashed scare me. Not long after we moved I was pretty sure that there were people in the streets needing a few lessons in dog training: “SPIIIKKKEEEE!!! COME HERE!!! SPIKE!”. After a few days hearing this while knitting or spinning I couldn’t hold back and took a look out of the window: The owner standing with crutches on the sidewalk, screaming at her unleashed and quite big dog running straight into some garden. Well, I went back to what I’ve been doing. A few days afterwards there was a storm and when I wanted to go shopping there was a rather big branch under my car. Definitely to big to just ignore it. So I bent down, grabbed the piece of wood and when I looked up again I saw the dog running to me, barking like mad. Even for me not-so-dog-experienced-person it was rather obvious that Spike thought that I would throw the branch away for him to catch it. GREAT. In the next second he tried to snatch it from me. I got scared and dropped it on the ground. Spike grabs the branch, pulls it up and scratches my car with it. As my car has already had a few scratches from various other things this was not such a big deal in general, but it still didn’t made me any happier in this moment. And believe it or not: not a single word from the owner! She was just standing there seeing me trying to get some distance between me&my car and her dog. When I asked her why she would let her dog walk around unleashed when it is obvious that he would disturb random dogophobic people the only thing she said was “he won’t do you any harm! He’s a good boy!”. To be honest, this wasn’t the point for me. I don’t care if this dog would do me any harm, I just don’t want to have him standing before me that close without his owner having any control at all over this animal.

And today it happened again! No branch this time, just me going to my car. So it seems that Spike will chase me regardless of me having a toylike thing in my hand or not. Maybe the dogowners will now shrug their shoulders and won’t understand why I’m making a fuss out of this, but I just want to get over the street without having a huge dog running behind me. Especially if the dog exceeds my hip-level.

 

This is where the cookie crumbles

How to make me happy? Just place one of those in front of me and I will start grinning…

Es gibt ein ganz einfaches Rezept um mich glücklich zu machen: einfach einen solchen Keks hinlegen…

(everyone not familiar with this awesome cookie: it’s an oreo. Kind of hard to get in Germany, which might be an advantage because otherwise I would gain fat as I now do wool)

And this wasn’t the only cookie around here! There were more! AND wool! AND a magazine! Look!

(für alle die einen solchen Keks noch nie gesehen haben: das ist ein Oreo. Kommt aus Amiland und ist in Deutschland eher selten gesehen. Das könnte aber auch ein Vorteil werden, weil ich sonst genauso schnell zunehmen würde wie mein Stash…)

Aber heute traf ich nicht auf einen Einzelgängerkeks, es waren mehrere! Und dazu noch Wolle! Und die aktuelle Vogue Knitting!

Dear sender, thank you so much again, you know who you are! (if I may use your phrase here )

What else? Well, I made a glove with the Rowan felted tweed and I’m sorry to say so, but I wasn’t too happy with it at all. This is what I call poor quality. I know, vegetable matter CAN be in a yarn, but that much in a yarn which is quite costly? In a yarn that broke 3 times while knitting with it? I mean, not pulling on it like a madwoman, just knitting? I can break it with my hands without any effort! This is just not what I expect from a yarn selling for 7 euros here. In addition to that: ribbing doesn’t pull in which is really bad for the cuff of gloves. Maybe I got a poor quality ball in hundreds of which would have been okay, nevertheless this experience might drive me away from it for quite a time.

… so I bought 3 other yarns and I’m hoping to find the yarn which is just perfect for the project.

Und noch einmal ein Großes Danke an den Absender!

Und nun noch zu den unerfreulicheren Nachrichten: Ich habe einen Handschuh mit der Felted Tweed gestrickt und ich bin garnicht begeistert. In der Wolle verstecktes Stroh kommt ja schonmal vor (obwohl ich das auch bei Noro schon eine Frechheit fand!), aber bei einer so teuren Wolle? Und ganz normal ist es doch auch nicht, wenn ein Garn beim Stricken 3 x reisst? Einfach so! Das Zeug lässt sich leichter reissen als Reihgarn! Sowas erwarte ich einfach nicht wenn ich 7 euro für 50g bezahle. Zudem: 2re 2li zieht sich überhaupt nicht so schön zusammen wie sonst (… und damit für den Handgelenksteil eines Handschuhs schonmal nicht so klasse ist). Vielleicht habe ich einfach großes Pech gehabt, aber diese Erfahrung wird mich erstmal davon abhalten nochwas davon zu kaufen.

Deshalb habe ich dann mal 3 andere Wollsorten in Handschuhmenge bestellt um zu sehen, welche für das Handschuhdesign am besten ist. (die Menge hält sich bei solch kleinen Projekten ja glücklicherweise in Grenzen).

Other news? YES, we have a kitchen now! Thanks to the best dad ever we could cook our dinner on Saturday! After more than a month of bread and butter, bread an cheese, bread and cookies, bread and icecream a plate full of pasta which parmesan and garlic was sooooo good.

.. and now onto the knitting content of this post: Sometimes there are easy patterns which nevertheless really appeal to me.

The Just enough ruffles scarf is one of them. Knit in 2 days, and I love this (made with 3 strands of sockyarn: 2 x Zitron and 1 x Drachenwolle)! Maybe I will make another one in black for a friend of mine..

Und noch was neues: Wir haben eine Küche! Dank des besten Vaters überhaupt konnten wir Samstag abend kochen! Nach fast einem Monat Brot mit Butter, Brot mit Käse, Brot mit Keksen, Brot mit Eiscreme war ein Teller Nudeln mit Knoblauch und Parmesan einfach himmlisch.

Wo wir gerade dabei sind:  Hallo Ihr beiden! (meine Eltern haben meinen Blog entdeckt…)

.. und nun noch zum Strickupdate: es gibt ja immer mal wieder einfache Muster die trotzdem einfach gut sind. Ein Beispiel ist für mich der Just enough ruffles scarf. Fertig in 2 Tagen und einfach nur toll! Vielleicht mache ich noch einen in schwarz für eine Freundin, mal sehen.

Sheep!

First of all, I finally managed to get the poster I bought at an exhibition last year glued on thin plywood. I first looked for a frame, but the prices were.. impressive ( it needed to be at least 84 x 120cm and the cheapest one was about 150 euros..). Here it is:

( to the right is an oil painting I did a few years ago. Not the perfect match for the sheep and it might seem a bit depressive, but I don’t take it that serious. As I have painted it myself the way I see it is just a bit different . Maybe I will share a few more pics of the paintings I’ve done here in the future)

Endlich habe ich es fertig gebracht, das Poster was ich auf einer Ausstellung letztes Jahr gekauft habe aufziehen zu lassen. Erst wollte ich ja einen Rahmen kaufen, aber in der Größe (mind. 84cm x 120cm) gab es nichts unter 150 euro. Somit schied diese Möglichkeit aus. Und bis ich dann einen Laden gefunden hatte, der Poster aufzieht (Hornbach machte es nämlich genau ab der Woche als ich dort hineinspazierte um nachzufragen nicht mehr. Grrr), verging doch etwas Zeit. Und so sieht nun meine Spinnecke aus:

(zur rechten ein Ölbild das ich vor einigen Jahren gemalt habe. Passt nicht wirklich zum Poster und sieht vielleicht etwas… depressiv aus, aber ich nehme das nicht so ernst, ich habe es ja selber gemalt *g*, da hat man eine etwas andere Beziehung zu seltsamen Motiven. Vielleicht poste ich ja mal ein paar Photos von weiteren Bildern hier…)

On Spinning: 2/3 of the yarn for wisteria is done! I’m still hesitant about what I will do to make it a cardigan (steeking would also be an option).

Wo wir gerade beim Spinnen/halbgerupften Schafen sind: 2/3 des Garns das ich für Wisteria brauche sind nun fertig! Ich bin mir immernoch nicht sicher, wie ich das Muster abändere um eine Jacke draus zu machen (vielleicht steeking?), aber das schaffe ich auch noch…

Die Fuzzy Feet für Henry haben dieses Wochenende noch eine Latexsole bekommen. Und dann dauerte es auch nicht lange, bis sie sich an seinen Füßen wiederfanden. Er scheint sie zu mögen

 

WHINE!!!!!

Can I whine a little? I didn’t realized until yesterday that having nothing to knit makes me that grumpy. Just took not enough yarn with me when I left Henry&theCraftRoom on sunday. Now the fuzzy feet are done and there’s nothing else to do! Okay, a few skeins are here, but I haven’t the right needle size for them! So I worked on two glove designs but it’s just not the same. All the numbers in my head while calculating the stitchcounts isn’t relaxing at all! I want my hour (or two) of knitting while listening to a podcast! Thank god I will be back = next to my stash tomorrow evening.

Darf ich mal kurz ein klein wenig jammern? Bis gestern war’s mir ja noch nicht so ganz klar, aber jetzt ist es sicher: wenn ich nichts zu stricken habe werde ich – nennen wir es jetzt mal misslaunig. Nachdem die Fuzzy Feet für Henry fertiggestrickt sind, ist einfach  nichts mehr da! BMein Stash ist ja umgezogen und so liegen hier im Wohnheim zwar noch 2,3 Wollknäule, aber eben nicht die passenden Nadeln. Als Ersatz habe ich mich dann mal daran gemacht zwei neue Handschuhe zu entwerfen, aber das ist einfach nicht das selbe. Gegen geruhsames Stricken mit einem schönen Podcast im Hintergrund ist dieser Haufen von Zahlen und Verhältnissen einfach sehr unerholsam. Bloß gut dass ich morgen abend wieder in Stash-Nähe bin.

That’s me…

Next week my exams start and what am I doing the whole weekend? No, no learning. Okay, almost none. But only a tiny bit. Who is to blame? The Wheel. After buying enough wool to make at least one Wisteria sweater (1200g!) in 3 colors (medium purple/dark purple/black) I just needed to start spinning. And after 3 bobbins were filled up with 150g of singles each asking me to wait until next weekend to ply them was just not an option. So I also plied them, resulting in:

Das war mal wieder typisch für mich. Nächste Woche fangen die Klausuren an und ich habe mal wieder alles zutun, aber lernen? Och neee. Vielleicht ein bischen, aber ja nicht zu viel. Und warum ist das so? Weil ich beschlossen habe Wisteria zu stricken, und zwar aus handgesponnener Wolle.  Also habe ich bei der Wollfabrik erstmal einen Berg Wolle gekauft (1200g!), und zwar in 3 verschiedenen Farben: violett, dunkelviolett und schwarz. Und da konnte ich natürlich nicht warten und lernend neben meinem Spinnrad sitzen, wenn ich genauso gut mit der Wolle in der Hand davor sitzen könnte. Tja, und so füllten sich 3 Spulen mit jeweils 150g. Die Zeit verflog, weg war sie, nie wieder gesehen. Und bis zum nächsten Wochenende mit dem Zwirnen warten, weil es schon 4 ist und ich doch noch lernen wollte? Nein, das geht nicht. Also auch noch gezwirnt. Und hier ist das Ergebnis:

The yarn gets to 7 wpi and is actually a bit bulkier than the pattern asks for. But as I plan to make a cardigan out of wisteria which should keep me warm I don’t think that it would be a problem. As a cardigan the resulting stiffness in the fabric won’t hurt, maybe it is even a pro because the wind will have it harder to get through.  And now I’m asking for your advice: I want to use a zipper as closure but I’m not sure about how much fabric on the edge is needed to fold down nicely and sew the zipper on. Any recommendations?

Die Wolle liegt so bei 7 wpi, ist also etwas dicker geraten als das im Original verwendete Garn. Und das ist noch nichtmal schlecht, denn ich hatte sowieso geplant aus dem Pullover eine Jacke zu machen. Dort ist es natülich eher praktisch, wenn das Gestrick etwas dichter ist, sonst pfeift es da ja wieder so durch. Und nun brauche ich noch einen Rat von euch: Ich überlege die ganze Zeit, wieviele Maschen ich an den Vorderteilen brauche (zum umklappen und Reißverschluss annähen). Hat da jemand Erfahrungswerte?

… another thing which got into my mind this week: why are there so few knitting magazines offering digital subscriptions? I heard of The Knitter offering it, but couldn’t find any other mayor magazine (thinking of IK or Vogue). Why? This is the perfect way to get hold of american knitting magazines without paying for the postage!

Und nun noch zu was Anderem: Warum gibt es so wenige digitale Abos bei Strickzeitschriften? Ich habe letztens davon gehört, dass The Knitter sowas anbietet, aber bei IK und Vogue habe ich nichts zu dem Thema gefunden. Wäre ja eigentlich die perfekte Möglichkeit Porto zu sparen.

Shibori

There was a Shibori-Workshop at the university, originally planned only for the Textile-Designers, but I managed to get in also. It was great! And I will definately try this again . The teacher was the owner of a Shibori-Shop in Düsseldorf, called Suzusan. Each of us got a piece of silk, a hook and cotton-thread wound on a peace of wood and tried to get the technique right, which is kind of a tye-dye-thing. Afterwards it got dyed with black acid dye and then dried before all the cotton thread was removed. The samples they showed us where much prettier than what any of us managed to do, but it was our first try.

Letzten Freitag fand ein Shibori-Workshop an der Hochschule statt, eigentlich zwar gedacht für Textildesigner, aber letztendlich durfte ich dann auch mitmachen. Und es wäre auch schade gewesen wenn ich keinen Platz mehr bekommen hätte, denn es hat großen Spaß gemacht. Der Vortragende hat selbst einen Shibori-Shop in Düsseldorf, Suzusan genannt. Jeder von uns hat ein Seidentuch bekommen, einen Haken und ein Holzstück um das Baumwollgarn gewickelt war. Die Technik ähnelt dem Tie-dye, wenn auch die Ergebnisse (nicht meine, die von den Leuten die das wirklich können) garnicht danach aussehen, dass das gewickelt wurde. Unsere mit Baumwollfaden gefesselten Tücher wurden dann mit Säurefarbstoff gefärbt, getrocknet, und dann befreit. Nagut, sonderlich ordentlich ist die Musterung innerhalb des tye-dyes nicht geworden, war ja aber auch der erste Versuch.

….cold feet and blankets

Ich bin von den Socken! Obwohl.. nicht so ganz, sie sind noch an meinen Füßen, aber trotzdem! Was das Stricken für andere angeht bin ich ja etwas *räusper* zurückhaltend, weil ich auf gar keinen Fall will, dass jemand peinlich berührt einen Schal auspackt und sich still und leise denkt „Was in aller Welt hat sie sich dabei gedacht?“. Also stricke ich nur auf Anfrage oder bei tief-fliegenden Zaunpfählen, geworfen von meiner Mitmenschen. Und so kam es, dass ich für Henry noch nie etwas gestrickt habe, einfach weil ich nicht das Gefühl hatte dass da Bedarf besteht. Und nun bekomme ich diese Woche einen Anruf, ob ich denn was dagegen hätte wenn er meine gefilzten Hausschuhe anziehen würde, weil er so kalte Füße hat. Und als ich ihm dann sagte, dass das okay wäre, aber die Teile am Wochenende doch eher an meine Füße gehören und ob er nicht auch ein Paar haben will. Ja, er will! Na klar, in etwas gedeckteren Farben (=schwarz), aber das rechtfertigte dann auch einen Einkauf bei der Wollbox, denn von der Cascade war nicht mehr genug da.

Wow, I’m impressed! I will tell you why: When it comes to christmas/gift-knitting I’m always a bit *ahem* cautious because I want to avoid having someone unwrapping a gift and thinking to himself “oh my, what the hell was she thinking when deciding to give me this?”. So I only knit if someone asks for it or gives me a broad hint. Thus I have never knitted anything for Henry so far, just because I thought that there wouldn’t be any demand. But this week I get a call from him if I would mind him wearing my fuzzy feet because of his cold feet. I mean, my fuzzy feet are made of wollmeise and so colorful that I thought something like this would never get on any part of his body. However, after I clarified that I’m humbled by his questions and I don’t mind him wearing my slippers during the week, on the weekend they’re mine. So he will get his on pair of (black) slippers and I had a good reason to visit the wollbox onlineshop again.

Die Prüfungen sind auch nicht mehr weit (noch etwas mehr als eine Woche) und so langsam wird’s doch etwas stressig. Aber dafür habe ich danach auch erstmal Semesterferien und kann vielleicht von den 4 Wochen die ich frei habe 2 komplett bei Henry sein und nur den Rest in Labor arbeiten. Aber mal sehen.

My exams are looming (merely one week until they will start) and slowly but surely it gets a bit more stressful. The positive thing: after the exams I will have holidays for 4 weeks = hope to be at least 2 weeks with henry and work the remaining 2 in the university lab. We’ll see.

Nachdem ich in der letzten Zeit haufenweise Socken auf der Strickmaschine produziert habe, reicht es erstmal

a) Weil ich einen Monat jeden Tag andere Stricksocken anziehen kann ohne die Waschmaschine nutzen zu müssen

b) Meine Sockenbox hoffnungslos überfüllt ist.

Und als ich letztens versucht habe meine letzten Wolleinkäufe in meinen Wollschrank zu stecken, war das garnicht so einfach, weil der doch schon recht voll ist. Und was nimmt viel Platz weg? Richtig, die 50 Knäul Knitpicks Palette. Also wird als nächstes die Decke auf der Strickmaschine angefangen. Was mich noch etwas davon abhält ist die Tatsache, dass ich es immernoch nicht hinbekomme halbrund/offen zu stricken, irgendwas stimmt mit den Stößern nicht. Riecht also nach Stößer ausbauen, saubermachen, ölen, einsetzen = dauert ewig. Aber ich könnte dieses Wochenende ja zumindest mal die Stößer ausbauen, vielleicht ist ein Etappenansatz hier doch garnicht schlecht. Und nun zur Decke: ich habe da mal einen Grobentwurf gemacht… Aber wahrscheinlich wird es wenn ich erstmal dran bin doch wieder anders.

After having churned out loads of socks since I got the knitting machine I reached the decision to take a machineknitted-sock-break. Reasons:

a) I have enough socks to live at least a month without a washing machine

b) My sockcontainer is crowded.

So I need another project and the first thing which came to my mind is the blanket I plan to make using the 50 balls of knitpicks palette. But since I still have problems knitting semiround(? .. what I mean: like a tube but with one open side) I will have to clean and oil the machine before I can start. Which is something I tried to get around for weeks. Maybe I will start taking all moving parts out this weekend. Back to the blanket: Here is a preview of what I imagine it to look like…. … however I highly suspect that it will turn out totally different because of me changing my mind at least 1000 times while knitting it.
